The Oku lodging in February has a lot of snowfall. As the feet slide, the temperature is low because it is in the mountains. However, there are figures that can only be seen during this period, it is worth seeing.

Great. I joined the daily tour from the aizu wakamatsu and it was worth it as ouchijuku could be difficult to access. The buildings in the area are really interesting and the view from top was breathtaking. Most of the shops in the area were closed but that doesn't affect our experience much. The bus journey to the area also provided lots of nice scenery.

Historical site, brought you back 100 years, minimum. Cannot complain, really.

Ouchi-juku is a small town that preserves the streets of the Edo period (1603-1867). There are about 50 thatched cottages with a strong sense of history, as if there were warriors at all times. This historical landmark is free for visit. You can also drink traditional tea, and buy traditional gifts here too.

Old village of Japanese styled.

Various guidebooks recommend this place. A reconstructed village of ye oldie times. The reality is not as cool as is made out to be. The houses are pretty, but that about all there is to it. Nearly every house is a gift shop, and many sell identical items. Some even go as far as selling generic "made in china" gifts. If you've never been to a reconstructed historical village, this might be an okay place to visit, but truth be told, Japan offers a LOT other such places that are a LOT more worthwhile.Lastly, since this place is not worth spending more than an hour at, the parking lot is exceedingly expensive at ¥400. And a car (or taxi) is the only way to get here within reason.

Interesting historical village although rather commercialised for thr tourist trade. It was extremely cold the day we were there. No snow but icicles hanging from the thatched roofs. Nice lunch in a warm restaurant near the entrance to the village.

Ouchijuku is an ancient post town and has many historic buildings. However there is not adequate information to understand the history unless you have read it first. Currently, sadly, almost all the buildings turn into souvenir shops or restaurants. I would skip this place if I knew it was like what I found.

Wow.. Amazing place. Specially the food of this place is very traditional as feels like 19th century. Would like to go again next winter.

It was the right decision for us to come here the 2nd weekend of February. There was a Snow Festival happening! We participated in decorating trees with Dango (rice cake) which was so much fun. The snow was probably 1 meter thick, making it rather hard for us to climb up the viewing point without slipping. But the view was worth it. Also do try out the traditional dish and snacks.

Small traditional town that's quite hard to get to as the bus services comes only handful of times a day. It's quite small so you can cover the entire town in about 2-3 hours, break and eating time included. They sell lots of negi-soba which is leek soba. You use the leek as chopsticks and just munch on it along with the soba.

A collection of traditional buildings most of which are working shops or (soba) restaurants. There's a nice view of the whole street from behind the house at the end. One of the house is small museum that's worth going inside to look at. There's not much in the way of English signage, but there's a nice video that shows how they re-roof one of the houses.

Totally set up as a tourist spot but still a really cool sight if you have time to visit. Be sure to stop in the little soba shop at the start of the street to eat some zaru soba with an onion 'spoon'.
Gil Yaish
Overcrowded for a single street, the huts are nicely restored.

Great place to visit especially in winter. If you go around 15:00, it’s a lot more empty so you can pretty much have the place to yourself.

Nice village, very isolated, unfortunately it's purely a touristy place. But none the less pretty from the outside!
Ioan Sameli
Cute village but very touristic. Every single house has been converted to a store. Feels more like a theme park than a real village.
James Cheung
A bit too commercial. You can hear people speaking Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean.

A restored post town that originated in the Edo period along a major highway that linked Aizu to Nikko, this small village is extremely instagrammable, although in winter many shops and restaurants appear to close early. Apart from views and the shops, there isn't much else to see (the museum here regrettably have no English info), although the shrine located outside the main street is quite enchanting, particularly in the snowfall.

Many old houses and lovely stores with souvenirs. There is a small water flow that you can wash your towel or body. The water is super clean and cool.

A good place to know more about the old Japan. The staff is really kind. There is a mini zoo and there is a old lady, who shows you all about the animals there and give you food to feed the rabbits, dogs, hamsters, etc. I had an unforgettable time there. :)

Nice thatched houses, not yet much exploited by foreign tourists. Somehow converted to a shopping street of restaurants mainly selling Negi-soba, the noodle with a long leek to eat as it comes, and also souvenirs and traditional crafts. Looks nice? Two stars down without any lockers. They expect everybody to drive their own way in. I got on the bus from Shirakawa to Wakamatsu coming here in when moving between the two cities and I need to ask my restaurant who is kind enough to help me with my small suitcase.
Come with me
Very beautiful snow (Jan20) But many shops closed.

Aside from the traditional houses we also enjoy eating soba/noodles and they offer a wide array ofnative products and souvenir items

Very cool area with vendors, cafes, and a beautiful setting. When I went it was rainy and relatively quiet. Worth seeing!

Beautiful snow scenes, delicious Green onion soba noddles, warm and smell so fresh and reasonable price! Lovely village covered by snow feels like wonderland! Denver Cookies are so yummy and so so crunchy, with soy sauce, miso, pepper, sugar flavors and so bigger than people’s face! You should try some.Observatory is like 5min walk from entrance, you must go up to see the entire village, quite tranquil and nice! However, stairs are extremely slippery, even with ropes and rails are still.... can’t avoid falling off. Gotta be careful!

The most famous old postal town in the north. If you are in Nikko or Aizu this one would be a perfect day trip in between. Very beautiful village, with a good photo location above the end of the main Street. Keep in mind after 5 p.m. it gets quiet and a bit lonely. Btw: when we drove back on our motorcycles in the early evening to Aizu, using old, very small local roads through the forests we came upon bears crossing the street. So just a reminder to watch out.

when I came to this village, it was not holiday so few tourist that has it feel peaceful. the must try is local special soba noodle with big green onion. you have to use green onion as chopstick and bite it together with the noodle. experienced very fresh and interesting. at end of street there is a shrine at high point, you can take good picture here no matter how bad the photography skill is.(like me)
FEDERICO MAGNANI
The view of the village covered in snow with the white mountains in the background was simply wonderful.

We travelled by public transport so is doable if you don't have access to a car. Allow a good hour to wander the village but it can be done in less. I was the only westerner but popular with the local Japanese. I would suggest getting there by the ealiest public bus before the tour buses arrive. This way you will get the best photographs without hoardes of people in your photos. A truly historic Japanese experience.

Really peaceful place with cool water. I got many souvenirs for my friends and family here. So many thing that look really Japanese with cute appearance so I bought a lot. I tried one snack and also tried the drink that is being cool by the water from the mountain. The only poor thing is the toilet in the car park.

Good for a quick visit but the way get to this place is amazing try coming in winter's by car
